Just a few decades ago, algae did not appear in the dishes of Europeans. It was considered to be an exotic product closely related to Japanese cuisine. Today, for convenience, Japanese cuisine can be ordered even with delivery here. Today it cannot be said that algae on our table is a common thing, however, the attitude towards this specific work of nature is undergoing changes.
In historical sources, information about the virtues of seaweed first appeared in ancient China, in the sixth century BC. However, their useful and gustatory qualities were also known in Europe, for example, the Vikings took them with them on long voyages to replenish the body's reserves of minerals and vitamins. But it's not just seaweed — Sinice spirulina, for example, contains a lot of useful components, mainly proteins, but it grows in lakes. Since time immemorial, when it was eaten by the Aztecs, it is specially grown in Mexico.
What is useful in them?
For millions of years, ground minerals and nutrients have been collected in the seas and oceans, brought by the waters of rivers and rains. But who uses them for their growth? First of all, the unusual sea grass — brown algae. The spectrum of their colors is incredibly diverse: from all shades of yellow to green and from red to dark brown and even black.
Algae contains 59 micro and macro elements – minerals and vitamins. Most of all they contain B vitamins, especially B12, as well as vitamin C (only fresh, this vitamin is not retained in dried algae), vitamin D, E and K. In addition, it is known that these plants are rich in protein and contain large amounts of iodine.
Interestingly, in countries where algae have been an integral part of the daily diet for centuries, such as Japan, China and Korea, cases of certain types of cancer have not been recorded for a long time. These amazing sea plants prevent obesity, activate the immune system, counteract many types of bacteria, limit the likelihood of cardiovascular disease, and help cleanse the body of heavy metals and radioactive contamination.
Variety of algae
This product is produced mainly on Far East. In specialized stores, as a rule, several varieties of algae are offered in packages of various sizes (from 15 to 100 grams) and processed in different ways. Their cost fluctuates within 150 rubles and depends, first of all, on quantity and availability. Keep in mind that most types of seaweed are meant to be added to food, in small quantities, as a seasoning.
